This is the way Nepalis remove the husk from rice paddy. The woman sitting puts the grain from the fields into the hole; I am causing the pestal to fall into the hole so that the husk breaks off. Later the sitting woman winnows what is broken up in the hole, separating out the white rice kernel from the rest. Women do this for hours at a time. The nice ladies let my mom and me do it.
This is the first part of the Buddhist festival called Cakan Dyah Jatra. People carried a large Buddha for six hours around the old city. A band came with the statue and people stopped everywhere to make offerings and touch the image for blessings. I was there taking a video of the whole thing and Brendan was standing next to me doing the same. It was tiring but fun.
